Season 8 Episode 1 – A Long-expected Party

Prologue – Rivendell

  • The White Council meets to discuss the Rings of Power.
  • Saruman declares the Ring lost in the Belegaer.

Hobbiton

  • Gaffer Gamgee and a few hobbits discuss Bilbo at the Green Dragon.
  • Bilbo continues to write the Red Book.
  • Bilbo and Frodo send out invitations to his 111th birthday party.
  • Bilbo and Frodo, along with Sam, Merry, Pippin, Fatty, Gaffer and several other hobbits prepare for the party.
  • Gandalf arrives and talks with Bilbo.

  • Bilbo gives a speech. At the end of the speech he puts on the Ring and disappears.

  • Frodo arrives back at Bag End. Gandalf gives him the Ring.

  • Saruman looks in the Palantir towards Mordor, finding Sauron.

  • Easterlings come to Mordor.
  • Sauron sends out servants to find the One Ring.

  • The Nazgul capture Gollum.

  • Gandalf finds and read a scroll written by Isildur about the One Ring.

Erebor

  • A messenger comes to Erebor to speak with Dain. They mention Bilbo and the Ring.
  • Dain sends Gloin, Gimli and a few others to Rivendell to warn Bilbo.

Season 8 Episode 2 – Three is Company

Mirkwood

  • Thranduil and an unnamed ranger lead Gandalf to a prison cell, containing Gollum.
  • Gollum tells Gandalf that he had been tortured by Sauron, telling him the words ‘shire’ and ‘Baggins’.
  • Gandalf realises Bilbo’s ring is the One Ring and leaves for the Shire.

Hobbiton

  • At the Green Dragon, rumours abound of evil spreading throughout the south.
  • Gandalf arrives at Bag End. He takes the Ring from Frodo and throws it in the fire. The runes that appear confirm that it’s the One Ring.

  • Gandalf explains the history of the Ring to Frodo.
  • Frodo realises he must take the Ring somewhere else. Gandalf recommends reliable companions, soon after catching Sam Gamgee eavesdropping at the window.
  • Gandalf leaves to meet with Saruman, telling Frodo to meet him at Bree.
  • Frodo holds a small gathering for his birthday, telling his friends he well be moving to Buckland.
  • The next day, Frodo sends Merry and Fatty to Buckland with his luggage.
  • As Frodo leaves with Sam and Pippin, he hears a strange voice talking to the Gaffer, asking for Mr Baggins.

  • The three set out towards Buckland.

The Shire

Ted_Nasmith_-_Last_Sight_of_Hobbiton

  • On the road, they hear hooves. Frodo urges them to hide. A black rider appears, stopping where they are hiding, before riding off again.
  • As night falls they come across another black rider, who comes towards Frodo. It rides off once it hears the singing of elves.
  • The elves come across Frodo. Their leader, Gildor, explain the black riders as servants of the enemy.

  • They hear hooves in the distance, but it turns out to be Merry.

Eregion

  • Gandalf comes upon Radagast, who tells him Sauron has sent the Nazgul out. Gandalf has Radagast send a note to Bree.

Isengard

  • Gandalf comes to Isengard.

Season 8 Episode 3 – The Old Forest

The Shire

  • The hobbits are given a ride by Farmer Maggot, who tells them of the black rider looking for Frodo.

  • Merry gives the hobbits dinner and a bath.
  • Frodo tells the others he plans to leave, only to have Merry and Pippin reveal they know all about the Ring, thanks to Sam. They insist on coming along.

  • Frodo dreams of a dark forest, a great sea and a white tower.
  • In the morning they leave Crickhollow, leaving Fatty behind.

The Old Forest

  • Merry leads them to a path, entering the Old Forest.
  • They lose the path several times, attempting to head north, but the trees block their way.
  • They find the river Withywindle and suddenly feel drowsy, falling asleep against an old willow.

J.R.R._Tolkien_-_Old_Man_Willow

  • Sam goes to find the ponies and when he returns he finds Frodo to have fallen in the river.
  • Frodo claims the willow pushed him in and that Merry and Pippin are trapped inside it. They attempt to light a fire but put it out when they hear Merry screaming.
  • Frodo runs to find help, and finds it. A man called Tom Bombadil. He sings a song demanding the willow free the hobbits, and it complies.

  • Tom takes the hobbits to his house.

Isengard

  • Gandalf talks to Saruman about the One Ring. Saruman however, desires it for himself. He offers Gandalf to join him and take the power from Sauron.
  • Gandalf refuses, and so Saruman overpowers him and imprisons him on the top of Orthanc.

The House of Tom Bombadil

  • The hobbits eat and sleep at Tom’s house. Tom tells them stories about the forest and the old cities that were built around it.

  • Boromir and Faramir have a dream – ‘Seek for the sword that was broken’

The Old Forest

  • Tom sends the hobbits in the direction of the Barrow Downs.

  • They walk through the fog-covered downs, to where they think they see the end.
  • Frodo sees the exit and rushes ahead, when he turns back he finds his friends gone, with cries in the distance.
  • Frodo hurries back until he finds a barrow. An icy hand grabs him and knocks him out.

Isengard

  • Gandalf sees the eagles flying nearby. He raises his staff and emits a bright light. Gwaihir notices him and flies to his aid.

Barrow Downs

  • Frodo awakens in a barrow. He hears a voice chanting and sees his friends lying next to him. A hand comes reaching for them and Frodo slashes at it with his dagger.

  • Frodo remembers the song Tom taught them and sings it. A voice answers his call. Tom smashes open the barrow and dispels the wight.
  • From the barrow’s treasure Tom takes a brooch and gives the four hobbits a Westernesse dagger each. He accompanies them to the exit then sends them to Bree.

Hobbiton

  • Gandalf speaks with the Gaffer, who tells him Frodo has already left and that black riders had been searching the area. Gandalf hurries to Bree.

Bree

  • A hooded figure watches the hobbits enter Bree.
  • Frodo asks for Gandalf at the Prancing Pony, but he is not there. Merry rests in the room while the other three drink in the hall.

Ted_Nasmith_-_At_the_Sign_of_the_Prancing_Pony

  • Barliman points Strider, the hooded figure, out to Frodo. Strider makes some comments that intrigues Frodo.
  • Frodo notices Pippin about to tell of Bilbo’s Ring. Frodo starts singing to distract them but falls and the Ring slips on his finger, astounding the people with his disappearance.

  • Frodo reappears in the corner and hurriedly takes Sam and Pippin back to the room, where Strider appears.
  • Strider tells them of the black riders and that Bree is not safe. Barliman comes to the room with a letter from Gandalf. Gandalf explains that Strider is to be trusted, his real name being Aragorn.
  • Merry, out on a walk, encounters a black rider. He hurries to tell the others.
  • Aragorn leaves pillow decoys in the beds and takes the hobbits down to the parlour.

2-m

Crickhollow

  • The black riders raid Crickhollow. Fatty flees.

Season 9 Episode 1 – The Taming of Smeagol

Rivendell

  • Glorfindel comes to Elrond with Haldir of Lothlorien. Haldir brings news of the breaking of the Fellowship.

Isengard

  • Saruman sends his army out with the purpose of killing Theoden of Rohan’s son, Theodred.

  • Theodred and his men are attacked. Theodred is slain.

Emyn Muil

  • Frodo and Sam wander Emyn Muil, frequently becoming lost.
  • They see the way down at the edge of a cliff, but cannot get down.

  • As they try and climb down the cliff, a dark shape flies overhead and Frodo falls to a ledge below.
  • Sam remembers his elven rope and they climb the rest of the way down.
  • Sam pulls on the rope, which surprisingly unfastens and falls down.
  • In the rain that night, Sam sees a creature crawling towards them. They see that it is Gollum, who jumps on Sam. Frodo subdues him with Sting. Gollum tries to escape but they capture him and bind him with the rope.

  • Gollum vows obedience and leads them on towards Mordor.
  • Gollum forces them to travel by night. He chokes on lembas bread and refuses to eat more.
  • Sam waits until Gollum falls asleep before resting himself. When they wake they find Gollum gone.
  • Gollum reappears later, with fish.

Dead Marshes

  • They walk through the Marshes. Gollum says not to follow the lights.

  • At night, a Ringwraith flies overhead.
  • As they come closer to Mordor, Frodo hears Gollum talking to himself over his desire for the Ring and his vow to serve Frodo.

  • Saruman contacts Sauron through the Palantir. Sauron commands Saruman to destroy Rohan and Isildur’s heir.
  • The men of Dunland swear to Saruman’s cause. He sends them to pillage Rohan.

  • Merry and Pippin stop for a drink of water. A tree behind them speaks, revealing himself to be an Ent – Treebeard.
  • Treebeard explains the Ent’s history to the hobbits, before taking them back to his home.

  • Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli follow the prints to a rock wall, in freezing weather. Climbing to the top, where they see the old man again.
  • Fearing Saruman, Gimli tells Legolas to shoot the old man. Aragorn orders the man to identify himself. The man throws off his grey cloak, revealing white clothes. It is Gandalf.

Ted_Nasmith_-_The_Stranger_in_the_Forest

  • Gandalf explains his battle with the balrog, his rebirth and his time in Lothlorien. He brings messages from Galadriel (flashback).
  • Gandalf knows that Treebeard has the hobbits. He leads the others out of the forest. On the way he tells of both Saruman and Sauron’s mistakes and how to use them to their advantage.
  • Treebeard tells Merry and Pippin of the return of Gandalf. He sets them to sleep in his home.

Ted_Nasmith_-_Wellinghall

  • The next day, Merry informs Treebeard of Saruman and the orcs’ destruction of Fangorn. Treebeard gives them food and water. He plans to stop Saruman.
  • More ents come to the clearing to meet with Treebeard. Merry and Pippin are left in the care of Bregalad.

  • Treebeard begins talking to the other ents about an alliance with Rohan and war with Saruman.

Plains of Rohan

  • Gandalf summons Shadowfax, who brings the other horses with him. They begin the ride to Edoras.

  • Saruman sends out his army of 10,000 uruks to attack Rohan.

  • Erkenbrand leads the Rohirrim against Saruman’s army. He is defeated.

Rohan

  • Gandalf and the others continue towards Edoras.

  • Legolas sees Edoras in the distance one morning. They proceed with caution.

Edoras

  • They come to Meduseld. The guards say they are not welcome, by order of Wormtongue. Gandalf becomes angry and demands to speak with Theoden. They are allowed inside, without weapons.
  • Wormtongue lashes out at Gandalf, who brings thunder down upon him.

  • Gandalf frees Theoden from Wormtongue’s influence. Theoden recovers his mind.
  • Theoden calls for his guards to release Eomer.
  • Theoden confronts Grima, accusing him of treason. He gives Grima the choice of fighting alongside the army or leaving the country. Grima leaves.

  • Theoden reunites with Eomer and Eowyn.

Fangorn

  • Bregalad translates the words of the Entmoot to Merry and Pippin.

  • Suddenly, the Entmoot lets out a mighty roar. Merry and Pippin see the trees move around them.
  • Treebeard takes Merry and Pippin and announces that the Ents are going to Isengard. The entire forest begins to move.

Edoras

  • Theoden visits the grave of Theodred. He expresses his regret in not being there for his son.
  • Aragorn becomes friends with Eowyn.

  • Theoden declares war on Isengard. He orders Eomer to assemble the army and prepare to ride west.
  • Grimbold returns with news that the Fords of Isen are lost. 10,000 uruks have invaded Rohan.
  • Theoden, Aragorn, Gandalf, Eowyn, Eomer, Legolas and Gimli debate their next move. Theoden decides to ride against the uruks at the Fords of Isen. Eowyn wishes to ride with them, but Theoden orders her to remain in Edoras to look after the people.

  • Theoden leads the army from Edoras.

Season 9 Episode 8 – The Stairs of Cirith Ungol

Ithilien

  • Sam awakens to find Gollum gone. Sam is relieved but Frodo reminds him of the help Gollum has given them.
  • The daylight becomes darker. Gollum returns and leads them east.

  • They come to the Cross-Roads. They see a headless statue of a King. The head lies nearby, crowned with flowers.
  • Gollum pushes them onwards down the Southward road.

Morgul Vale

  • The air becomes filled with a foul stench. Frodo begs for rest but Gollum and Sam push him to keep going.
  • The Tower of the Moon rises in the distance.

The Tower of the Moon, by Ted Nasmith

  • They move past the north gate of Minas Morgul. As they do so, the tower erupts in thunder and the gates open.
  • The Witch-King leads a great host out of the tower. Frodo and Sam hide, yet the Witch-King halts near them. Frodo reaches for the Ring, but the Witch-King keeps moving.

  • They start to climb the Straight Stair

Fangorn

  • The ents reach the edge of Fangorn. Treebeard commands them to destroy Isengard.

Isengard

  • The ents break down the walls of Isengard despite being shot at with arrows.

The Wrath of the Ents, by Ted Nasmith

  • Treebeard breaks the gate. Bregalad sees Saruman inside and rushes at him, but Saruman reaches Orthanc safely.
  • Saruman activates vents all over Isengard, sending fiery blasts into the air. Beechbone is caught in a blast, burning to death.
  • Treebeard goes berserk. His roars crack stone and the ents destroy Saruman’s machinery.

Straight Stair

  • Frodo and Sam struggle up the stair, forced to climb with hands and feet.
  • Frodo becomes distraught, fearing he is too late in destroying the Ring.
  • They reach the end of the Straight Stair, but Gollum says the Winding Stair is still to come.
  • Gollum scampers off. Frodo and Sam talk of old songs and stories and whether they will ever be characters in them.
  • Gollum talks to himself about Frodo and his plan. He comes to a passage and talks with something inside.
  • Gollum returns to find Frodo asleep. He feels guilty, even feeling true affection for Frodo. Sam wakes up and accuses Gollum of sneaking.

Gollum’s Debate, by Ted Nasmith

  • Frodo frees Gollum from his bond, but Gollum says he must lead them to the end. They continue on.

Isengard

  • The ents have dug great trenches. Bregalad destroys the dam of Isen, flooding Isengard.

  • The remaining orcs try and escape, but are caught by the forest of Huorns surrounding Isengard.
  • Wormtongue arrives on horseback. Treebeard captures him.
  • Saruman berates Wormtongue for losing control of Theoden.
  • Treebeard thanks Merry and Pippin. The hobbits find pipe-weed in a storeroom.

Season 9 Episode 9 – The Voice of Saruman

Helm’s Deep

  • The remaining men of Rohan bury their dead. Theoden personally buries Hama.
  • Theoden pardons the men of Dunland.
  • They gather on the plain. Gandalf reveals the trees are Huorns sent by Treebeard. He asks Theoden to accompany him to Isengard.

Gap of Rohan

  • Theoden selects Eomer and twenty riders and goes with Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to Isengard.
  • Gimli and Legolas trade tales of the battle.
  • They see many bodies of slain Rohirrim on the way to Isengard.

  • A strange black liquid passes over the ground.

Isengard

  • They come to Isengard, where they reunite with Merry and Pippin.
  • Gandalf and Theoden ride to meet with Treebeard.
  • Merry and Pippin bring food to the riders. Gimli regrets that he has no pipe and Pippin gives him one of his own.

  • Aragorn returns the hobbits’ knives and brooches.
  • Treebeard tells Gandalf that Saruman remains in the tower. Gandalf returns to Isengard.
  • The others follow Gandalf to Orthanc. Gandalf calls for Saruman to appear. Wormtongue answers and Gandalf demands to speak with Saruman.
  • Saruman appears, speaking in a sad voice. He appeals to Theoden, but Gimli interrupts him and Theoden refuses to forgive.

  • Gandalf offers Saruman a chance to come back to their side. Saruman considers, but refuses out of pride. He instead tries to again persuade Gandalf to join him.
  • After Gandalf refuses, Saruman rages, insulting Gandalf and the others.
  • Gandalf once more asks Saruman to come down, but he turns away. Gandalf in response breaks Saruman’s staff and casts him from the order.

John_Howe_-_Saruman

  • Upon seeing this, Wormtongue throws the Palantir at Gandalf, but misses. Pippin picks it up before Gandalf takes it from him.
  • Saruman rages at Wormtongue for losing the Palantir.
  • Gandalf asks Treebeard to keep Orthanc surrounded with water so Saruman cannot escape.
  • Gandalf carries Merry and Aragorn carries Pippin as they leave Isengard.

Gap of Rohan

  • That night, Merry and Pippin talk about Gandalf.
  • Pippin, unable to sleep, creeps over to Gandalf and steals the Palantir.
  • Looking into it, he sees a dark flying creature and then Sauron.

Season 10 Episode 8 – The Steward and the King

Mordor

  • Gwaihir bears Gandalf over Mordor to Mount Doom.

Dale

  • Bard II and Thorin Stonehelm drive the enemy from Dale.

Dol Guldur

  • Celeborn and Thranduil destroy Dol Guldur. Galadriel purifies the fortress.

Middle-earth

  • All over Middle Earth, the enemy flees.

Cormallen

  • Sam and Frodo awaken to find Gandalf. They are taken outside where the whole Army of the West celebrates their deeds.

  • They are reunited with Pippin, Merry, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli.

Rivendell

  • Elrond receives word of Sauron’s defeat. He gives leave for Arwen to marry Aragorn.

Minas Tirith

  • Faramir and Eowyn speak of their dreams, a wave climbing over green lands. As they do so, the shadows depart and the sun is unveiled.

  • Faramir shows Eowyn the beauty of healing and of the gardens. He offers her his love.
  • The Army of the West return to the city. Faramir gives Aragorn the keys and the crown of Earnur.
  • Gandalf crowns Aragorn King of Gondor and Arnor.

  • Aragorn enters Minas Tirith and sits on his throne.
  • Aragorn pardons the Easterlings and the Haradrim. He pardons Beregond from death, but banishes him from Minas Tirith, setting him to instead be captain of the White Company in Ithilien.

  • Eowyn speaks with Aragorn. Afterwards, she agrees to marry Faramir.

Rohan

  • Elladan and Elrohir meet the escort of Arwen, including Elrond, Glorfindel, Galadriel and Celeborn.

White Mountains

  • Gandalf takes Aragorn high into the mountains. They look across his realm and find a sapling of the White Tree.

Minas Tirith

  • Weeks later, Aragorn and Arwen are wed.

  • The Fellowship and their friends leave Minas Tirith.

Edoras

  • King Theoden is laid to rest. Faramir and Eowyn are betrothed.
  • Arwen speaks to Frodo of her place on the ships into the west.

  • Elrond and Arwen go into the hills where they say their final goodbyes.

Isengard

  • Treebeard reveals he has released Saruman.
  • Legolas and Gimli leave the Fellowship, travelling through Fangorn.

Eriador

  • They come across Saruman and offer him mercy. He declines.
