Season 8 Episode 9 – Lothlorien

Mirrormere

  • Frodo dreams of Gandalf in the abyss, surrounded by darkness and nameless monsters.
  • Gimli takes Frodo to look into the waters of the Mirrormere.

  • Aragorn examines Sam and Frodo’s wounds, finding Frodo’s mithril coat.

Nimrodel

  • Aragorn leads them to Lothlorien, though Boromir is wary.
  • Legolas tells the history of Lorien. Gimli is angered at the suggestion that the dwarves’ actions had threatened the surrounding lands.

Lothlorien

  • As the company enters the woods, they are stopped by Haldir.
  • Haldir takes them up into their tree platforms. Soon after, orcs pass underneath.
  • Haldir’s men kill the orcs. Frodo sees Gollum for a brief moment.

Caras Galadhon

  • Haldir takes them to Caras Galadhon. He forces Gimli to be blindfolded. When Gimli objects, Aragorn says they will all be blindfolded.
  • Haldir removes their blindfolds. He takes Frodo and Sam up to a high platform overlooking the beauty of the forest.

  • The company meet with Galadriel and Celeborn. Aragorn tells them of Gandalf’s demise. Celeborn blames the dwarves, but Galadriel says it is not their fault.
  • Galadriel searches the hearts of the Fellowship.
  • Aragorn daydreams about his time with Arwen in the forest. He also remembers his last meeting with his mother, Gilraen.

  • The Fellowship, and the Lorien elves, grieve for Gandalf. Frodo writes a song in his memory.
  • Galadriel soothes Gimli’s sorrows, using Khuzdul. Gimli attempts to compliment her, clumsily.
  • Legolas and Gimli walk together in the woods, finding friendship instead of hate.
  • Galadriel takes Frodo to the middle of her garden, Sam follows. She fills a basin there with water and bids Frodo to look. Sam looks first and sees the Shire destroyed. Frodo sees an old white man, ships, a white tower and a great eye.

  • Galadriel tells them it is what may come to pass. She shows Frodo her ring. Frodo offers her the Ring, but after a dark vision she refuses.

  • Aragorn tells the others they must continue. Boromir wants to go to Minas Tirith, not to destroy the Ring. Frodo does not wish to.
  • Galadriel gives them all gifts. The Elfstone to Aragorn, the Phial to Frodo, belts and daggers to Boromir, Merry and Pippin, a box of earth to Sam, a bow to Legolas and three of her golden hairs to Gimli.

  • Celeborn offers each of them to stay in Lorien, but they all choose to follow Frodo. He gives them lembas bread, rope and elven cloaks.
  • In boats, they leave Lorien down the river Anduin.

Isengard

  • Saruman sends out Ugluk and the Uruk-Hai to track the Fellowship.

Season 9 Episode 6 – The Forbidden Pool

Dol Guldur

  • Khamul the Ringwraith sends out armies to attack Lothlorien and the Woodland Realm.

Lothlorien

  • The army of Dol Guldor attacks Lothlorien. The army is repelled by Celeborn and the power of Galadriel’s ring.

Ithilien

  • Sam awakes to find Faramir interrogating Frodo. Faramir alludes to the dream Boromir told of at Rivendell.

  • Faramir suspects Frodo of betraying Boromir.
  • Faramir confronts Frodo over Boromir’s death, revealing he has seen the funeral boat. Frodo does not believe Boromir is dead.
  • Faramir cannot hold back his grief, asking for answers about Boromir’s death.
  • Faramir decides to take them back to Minas Tirith.
  • Frodo and Sam are blindfolded and taken west. Faramir asks questions about Isildur’s Bane, suspecting that Frodo carries it.

Henneth Annun

  • Faramir removes their blindfolds and shows them the Window on the West.

  • He tells them about the glory of Gondor, including fighting alongside Boromir. (flashback)
  • Sam accidentally reveals Boromir tried to take the Ring. Frodo shows Faramir the Ring, but he has no interest in it. Frodo tells him of the quest to destroy it.
  • Frodo and Sam go to sleep. Faramir recounts the battle of Osgiliath, where Boromir, Faramir and a company held the bridge against the Witch-King. The bridge was eventually destroyed. Only four survived.
  • Faramir hears of Gollum in the river, waking Frodo and Sam.
  • Faramir shows them Gollum. Frodo pleads for them not to kill him.

  • Frodo persuades Gollum to come with him, but Faramir’s men capture him.
  • Faramir interrogates Gollum, who does not co-operate. Frodo intervenes and Faramir trusts his judgment.
  • Faramir takes them back to the road. He warns Frodo about Gollum and Minas Morgul, but Frodo says he must continue.

  • Faramir leads his men back to Osgiliath.

Ithilien

  • Gollum leads them on. From afar, they see the shape of the Morgul Valley and Minas Morgul.

Barad-Dur

  • Sauron commands the Witch-King to lead the army to Minas Morgul and then to Gondor.

Season 9 Episode 10 – Shelob’s Lair

Barad-Dur

  • Sauron sees Pippin in the Palantir. He questions about the Ring, but is cut off. He orders the Nazgul to make for Isengard.

Gap of Rohan

  • Gandalf takes the Palantir and chastises Pippin.
  • Gandalf explains the Palantir and how Saruman was corrupted by it.
  • They debate their next move, with Gandalf noting that the confusion caused by Pippin could work to their advantage.

Winding Stair

  • Sam helps Frodo up the last part of the Winding Stair. Gollum shows where to go next: a dark tunnel.
  • Despite the terrible smell and the possibility of orcs, Frodo and Sam enter.

Shelob’s Lair

  • The hobbits can only move forward by feeling the walls. They call out for Gollum, but he has disappeared.
  • Frodo and Sam continue on. Frodo begins to feel an overwhelming sense of dread.
  • They hear scurrying and hissing around them. They feel dead bodies beneath their feet. Frodo raises the Phial of Galadriel.
  • The light illuminates hundreds of eyes. As they move closer, they are revealed to belong to a giant spider, Shelob.
  • Frodo walks towards the eyes, which retreat from the light.
  • Frodo and Sam flee, but are blocked by strong cobwebs. Frodo cuts them with Sting and they head for the exit.
  • Sam sees orcs ahead and tries to warn Frodo. Shelob attacks, cutting off Sam. Sam goes to save Frodo but is dragged away by Gollum.

  • Shelob attacks Frodo, who fights but is poisoned and falls unconscious.
  • Sam fights against Gollum. He threatens to stab him and Gollum flees.
  • Sam attacks Shelob, who is over Frodo’s body. He sees Frodo, seemingly dead, wrapped in web.

  • Sam struggles with the spider, stabbing it in the eye. Shelob overpowers him, but Sam stabs her in the belly. Shelob flees.

  • Sam checks Frodo’s heartbeat, but finds nothing.
  • Sam thinks Frodo is dead and takes the Ring. He hears orc voices coming.

Gap of Rohan

  • A Nazgul flies over the group, forcing them to hide.
  • Gandalf predicts that Sauron will move to attack Minas Tirith. He advises Theoden and Aragorn to ride to Gondor. He gives Aragorn the Palantir.
  • Gandalf takes Pippin with him and leaves on Shadowfax.

Lothlorien

  • An army again approaches Lothlorien. Galadriel says unless Sauron is defeated they will eventually be overrun.

Edoras

  • Eowyn receives word that the men were victorious, yet the riders say Theoden may yet ride to Gondor. Eowyn prepares for them to leave for Dunharrow.

Rivendell

  • Elrond and Glorfindel talk about the fate of Middle-Earth. Elrond decides to prepare his elves to leave for the Grey Havens.

Shelob’s Lair

  • Sam puts on the Ring. The orcs take Frodo. Sam overhears them talking about Shelob’s poison and how it paralyses, not kills.
  • Sam follows the orcs into Mordor.

  • The Witch-King’s army moves towards Osgiliath, where Faramir awaits.

Season 10 Episode 6 – The Land of Shadow

Barad-Dur

  • Shagrat comes to the Tower. He shows Sauron the mithril vest. Sauron kills him.
  • Sauron commands the Ringwraiths to move forward their armies in the north.

Gorgoroth

  • Sam and Frodo scurry away from Cirith Ungol. The Nazgul return from the battle to Barad-Dur. Frodo and Sam run and hide.
  • Under a bridge, they hear an orc company pass above them. They slide down a cliff into a tangle of thorns.
  • Frodo struggles to walk. He takes his orc-mail off. They see the west wind blow away some of the black cloud overhead.

  • They find a stream, the first water they have had in days.
  • Frodo falls asleep and Sam keeps watch. He looks over Mordor and sees in the sky a white star. He falls asleep as well.

Rivendell

  • With his elves departing, Elrond and Arwen receive news from Glorfindel of the victory in Gondor and battles in Dale, Mirkwood and Lothlorien.

Erebor

  • King Brand retreats to Erebor. Dain leads the dwarves out to fight. Brand is mortally wounded. Dain defends his body, but is wounded himself. They retreat inside the mountain.

  • The Woodland Realm is set alight. Thranduil rides out and repels the attackers.

Lothlorien

  • Celeborn drives back the third assault. Galadriel says they must destroy Dol Guldur.

Minas Tirith

  • Theoden is carried through the city. Pippin finds Merry.
  • Beregond brings Faramir to the Houses of Healing. Eowyn and Merry are also brought there.
  • Aragorn waits outside of the city for Denethor to allow him to enter. Imrahil tells him of Denethor’s fate. Aragorn appoints Imrahil as acting leader.
  • Gandalf meets Aragorn. He asks for aid in the Houses. He tells Eomer that Eowyn lives.
  • Aragorn asks for kingsfoil. Ioreth sends Bergil to fetch some.

  • Aragorn heals Faramir, Eowyn and Merry, who awake and speak with him.
  • People gather to see Aragorn. They ask for his help in healing. He and the sons of Elrond work through the night.

Gorgoroth

  • Frodo and Sam see the vast armies of Mordor. They have no choice but to walk through.
  • They overhear two orcs talk of a great elven warrior on the loose.
  • Sam thinks he sees Gollum spying them.

John_Howe_-_Mount_Doom

  • A battalion of orcs come up behind them. They hide but are spotted and forced into line.
  • Frodo stumbles. As he does, another orc company crashes into them. Scuffles break out and Sam drags Frodo out of the lines and into a pit.

Mirkwood

  • Thranduil and Celeborn meet in Mirkwood, planning to attack Dol Guldur

Season 10 Episode 10 – The Grey Havens

The Shire

  • Merry and Pippin drive the last of the ruffians from the Shire.
  • Sam plants the seed found in the box of Earth Galadriel found him.
  • Over the next year, the Shire is rebuilt.

  • Frodo falls ill in March, the anniversary of his poisoning.
  • Merry and Pippin are hailed as heroes all over the Shire.
  • Sam marries Rosie. They have a child, whom Frodo helps name Elanor.

Rivendell

  • Galadriel and Gandalf come to Rivendell. With Elrond they decide it’s time to leave Middle-Earth.
  • Elrond gives his sons their choice to go into the West or become mortal. They are undecided, but choose to stay for the time being.
  • With Bilbo, Glorfindel and a few other Noldor, the keepers leave Rivendell for the last time.

The Shire

  • Frodo plans to go to Rivendell to see Bilbo. He gives Sam the keys to Bag End and the Red Book.
  • They meet the keepers on the road.

The Grey Havens

  • They pass the white towers Frodo dreamed of and come to the Grey Havens.

  • Cirdan welcomes them at the gates. Gandalf is also there, with Merry and Pippin.
  • Frodo reveals to Sam he is leaving Middle Earth with Bilbo. He says goodbye to his friends and leaves on the ship with the Ringbearers.

  • Sam returns to Bag End, reuniting with Rosie and Elanor.

  • The light of the elves diminish and the elven realms are eventually abandoned. Celeborn travels over the sea, taking with him the last memory of the Noldor.

Rohan

  • In old age, Eomer invites Merry and Pippin to Edoras. He dies and they move on to Gondor.

Minas Tirith

  • Merry and Pippin die in Gondor. They are entombed beside Aragorn, after his death many years later.

  • The boats of Legolas and Sam see the tower of Avallone and behold the white shores of Valinor, where old friends await.

Season 7 Episode 4 – Barrels Out of Bond

Lothlorien

  • Gandalf comes to Lothlorien, where he meets the White Council.
  • Gandalf tells of Thrain and Sauron in Dol Guldor and urges an attack.

Mirkwood

  • The dwarves are tied up in webs. Bilbo kills a spider and puts on the Ring. He calls his dagger ‘Sting’.
  • Bilbo lures the spiders away and frees the dwarves.

  • They find that Thorin is missing. The spiders return and the dwarves manage to kill them.
  • As they are looking for Thorin they are captured by wood-elves. Bilbo evades capture.

Elvenking’s Halls

  • Thorin had been captured earlier and was brought before Thranduil.

  • Thorin refuses to tell of his quest and is locked up with the others.
  • Bilbo finds the dwarves and relays messages between them.
  • Bilbo steals the keys from Thranduil’s drunk butler and frees the dwarves.
  • Bilbo gets the dwarves into barrels. The elves come and push the barrels into the river.
  • Bilbo grabs onto a barrel and rides down the river until they get to the Long Lake.

Esgaroth

  • The raft-elves find the barrels and load them onto the raft, where Bard takes them back to Laketown.

Season 7 Episode 5 – Inside Information

Laketown

  • The dwarves pop out of the barrels when they arrive at Laketown, dirty and exhausted.
  • Bard takes them to meet the Master.
  • The Master throws a feast for the dwarves. Thorin hailed as a hero.

Lothlorien

  • Saruman agrees to an attack on Dol Guldor.
  • The elves of Lothlorien ready for the attack.

Erebor

  • The dwarves walk through Dale and find the secret door.
  • Bilbo finds the thrush and the sun shines upon the keyhole.

Ted_Nasmith_-_When_the_Thrush_Knocks

  • Thorin sends Bilbo down to steal something.
  • Bilbo sees Smaug and steals a cup, taking it back to Thorin.
  • Smaug notices the cup is gone and bursts out of the mountain. He finds the ponies and eats them. Bombur has remained at the bottom of the mountain. They hurl him up with a rope and flee inside the door before Smaug scorches the side of the mountain.

Ted_Nasmith_-_Scouring_the_Mountain

  • They send Bilbo back down to find the Arkenstone. Smaug smells him this time. Bilbo flatters Smaug until he can find the Arkenstone, at the same time seeing Smaug’s weak spot.
  • Smaug deduces Bilbo is from Laketown and so flies off to destroy it.
